Jung’s dream of the “Brocken Spectre”: the solution
“It was night in some unknown place, and I was making slow and painful headway against a mighty wind.
Dense fog was flying along everywhere. I had my hands cupped around a tiny light which threatened to go out at any moment…
Suddenly I had the feeling that something was coming up behind me. I looked back, and saw a gigantic black figure following me…
When I awoke I realized at once that the figure was a “specter of the Brocken,” my own shadow on the swirling mists, brought into being by the little light I was carrying.” (Carl Gustav Jung)
Did you recognize at least one Tarot Card which seems to portray the dream scene?
Very good: it’s the Hermit Tarot card!
Now, a little more challenging question: which other Tarot card would you choose to represent the gigantic black figure following the Hermit? It has to be a scary Tarot card, a specter, something recalling a “Shadow figure”.
Yes, you’ve got it! The Devil Tarot card!
Now, place these two Tarot cards side by side:
See? We’ve built a Tarot sequence which visually translates the dream! Now it’s up to your Tarot reading ability to get the underlying message of the dream, formulating an interpretation based on Tarot symbolism.
The Hermit proceeds slowly in the dark. He keeps the lantern lit, with the Devil behind his back.
Looking at this spread, we perceive the emotional tension of Jung/Hermit, terrified by the Shadow/Devil behind him and at the same time trying to preserve the tenuous flame of the lantern. The lantern symbolizes the light of reason. “Le Diable” is actually the Shadow of Jung. The sequence seems to suggest that the energies of the Devil / Shadow are actually the fuel of the hermit’s lantern.
We could summarize the interpretation of the dream with a comment: we spend our life searching for the truth with the sole light of consciousness (Hermit), but we do not realize the importance of our Shadow, from which it is impossible to detach (The Devil … and the chains that bind us inextricably to him!).
We thus discover that the seemingly negative unconscious side has the same dignity as consciousness. That’s the secret message of the dream and we deciphered it using Tarot as a decoding tool!
Welcome to the world of OniroTarology, the art of interpreting dreams with Tarot.
What is OniroTarology?
Have you ever thought that dreams and Tarot speak the same language?
OniroTarology is an innovative methodology that combines dream interpretation and Tarot, according to Carl Gustav Jung’s teaching. Specifically, the objective of OniroTarology is to interpret dreams with Tarot symbolism.
OniroTarology is not a divination or cartomancy practice based on drawing cards; on the contrary, Tarot cards are chosen according to their symbolism, using them as a decoding tool. In practice, you build a Tarot spread which is connected to the dream symbolism, translating the story behind the dream in a meaningful sequence of Major Arcana.
Whereas traditional methods advise against reading Tarot for yourself, OniroTarology is an unvaluable tool for self-awareness, establishing a connection with your unconscious. But of course it’s a precious methodology to interpret a Querent’s dream, too!

About the author of OniroTarology
My name is Massimiliano, and I am the author of OniroTarology.
I am a Tarot and dream interpretation techniques expert according to the Jungian approach. I founded the OniroTarology method, publishing the book “OniroTarologia” in 2012 for the publishing house “Cerchio della Luna”.
I’ve been working for years with jungian psychologists and psychotherapists refining the OniroTarology method on real patients’dreams.
I am fond of symbology, alchemical texts, antiquity, and of course of the one who I consider to be the greatest and underestimated thinker of the ‘900: Carl Gustav Jung.
